    Steve Sherriff

Steve Sherriff commenced his professional musical journey at sixteen, enlisting with the Royal New Zealand Navy Band in 1978. Within the vibrancy of the jazz big band, Steve's talent shone, as he held the position of lead alto saxophonist for a commendable decade.

Upon his departure from the navy ensemble, Steve ventured into teaching and became a mainstay in the Auckland jazz circuit. Throughout the years, his saxophone has enriched the sounds of numerous renowned jazz collectives, including those led by Rodger Fox and the Auckland Jazz Orchestra, among others.

Steve has significantly shaped the direction of smaller outfits, particularly the jazz-funk quintet Bluetrain. It was with this group that Steve's flair for composition emerged, leading to a wealth of contributions to their discography. Bluetrain's album "No Free Lunch" garnered critical acclaim, securing a Tui at the NZ Music Awards in 1997.
